Ever Wonder Where The "Super Bowl" Got It's Name?

I am a huge football fan. Normally the Play-offs and the Super Bowl are a few of my favorite things to watch in the winter. This year it is a bit different considering the two teams are going to be playing in the Super Bowl this year. I am not much of a fan of either, but considering I really cannot stand the Steelers, I will be hoping the Packer's win this evening. In honor of the game here is some trivia for those who are interested.

Is the Super Bowl really named after a 1960s children's toy?

Follow Yahoo! Sports on Facebook and be the first to know about the most interesting stories of the day.

It seems too much like an urban legend to be true that the Super Bowl was named after a children's novelty toy that was popular in the mid-1960s.

But strange as it sounds, it is. The name of America's biggest sport event got its name from

a Wham-O toy called "Super Ball." The story was recounted in Michael MacCambridge's book, "America's Game."

Once the NFL-AFL merger was announced, discussions began about the inaugural championship game between the winners of the two leagues. A group of seven men were tasked with the specifics. During the course of the meetings, it became confusing when the men referred to "the championship game" because the others didn't know whether he was referring to the league championship games or the finale, which still didn't have a name. To end the mix-ups, Kansas City Chiefs founder Lamar Hunt jokingly referred to the final championship game as the "Super Bowl." He had come up with the name while watching his children play with the toy pictured above.

"Super Bowl" is how the game was referred to for months, even though Hunt himself said it was "far too corny" to ever be used on the big stage. In the middle of 1966, he wrote commissioner Pete Rozelle and said the group needed to come up with an official name for the game. "If possible," he wrote, "I believe we should 'coin a phrase' for the Championship Game. [...] I have kiddingly called it the 'Super Bowl,' which obviously can be improved upon."

Rozelle agreed. The league's publicity director recalled that the commissioner despised the word "super," because it didn't have any sophistication. Rozelle was evidently a "stickler on words and grammar." The game would be known as the "AFL-NFL World Championship Game."

That bulky title didn't last. People caught wind of Hunt's name and soon everyone, from media members to players, were calling the title game "the Super Bowl." The NFL was slow to adapt, though. It wasn't until the third game that the words "Super Bowl" appeared on the official game program and the fourth game when the phrase appeared on tickets.

I'm back up and running :)

I finally have a computer at home again... It feels even more like a luxury to have one back after not having one for nearly two weeks now...

Life for me has been very crazy the past few weeks...As I mentioned in my last post I went to Tennessee for my cousin's wedding. It was a very nice trip that was spent with some family who I haven't seen for about five years or so and some for three years.... It was a good catch up time. My cousin's wedding was a very simple one. There was such a sense of teamwork and love in my cousin's little church community. The reception was held in their church, and the whole church group worked together for a pitch-in for the food. I have never seen so much food in my entire life, and it was all just so good! I have to say it was the good southern hospitality going on... After the reception we all worked together to clean up and put the church area back in order... there were kids of all ages running around and helping out. There was a groups that were singing worship songs as they were cleaning up. It was a nice place to be...

The drive down there was not a nice one. We left early in the morning while it was raining, and it rained the whole drive there which made it seem as if we were on the road forever.... the drive back was much better...

Sadly, I was not able to get to Mass on Sunday because I did not have a way to get to one.... when we got home it was too late to go to the 5:30 Mass, and they canceled the 9:00 p.m. Mass due to the superbowl... go figure. I felt totally off that whole day without Mass on Sunday. I was very sad to miss it... and my whole family knew how I felt because I kept mentioning how disappointed I was the entire day.

So we got home around six fifteen which was just in time for the superbowl kick-off... it was a hard game for me to watch this time, not only because my team lost, but as I mentioned before, I was just feeling off, and that feeling would not go away... Hopefully if the roads get cleared up here I will make it to Mass tonight.. I will see about that.... Turns out we have another snow day today... a five day week-end. I do not know when the next time that will happen for me, so I am relishing it today.

So that was a long update on my week-end. Now that my computer is back I will be able to blog a lot more again. I have been missing it. :)

"Walking in a Winter Wonderland"

I have now spent about four days without really posting up a blog due to computer problems... my computer has yet to be fixed. I am now sitting at work on break and thought I would make a short one.

This week-end I was surprised with having two snow days, which meant an unplanned four day week-end for me. It was a relaxing one. I spent Thursday pretty much all day in my pj's. I didn't go anywhere and I was just plain lazy.... both Thursday and Friday I spend helping sew a blanket for my baby nephew who will be here in just a matter of weeks hopefully. :) I also read an entire book in those two days as well...

Friday night was fun. I went bowling and hung out with some friends. It was a nice night out....

Saturday I went sledding with my sister and some of her friends at the local popular place to sled... known to us b-town people as "Dyer Hill." I hadn't really gone sledding in so long that I forgot just how much fun it is. My sister and I did at one point accidentally hit a ramp and the sled flew out from under us and I landed on ice... My behind has been somewhat sore from that all week-end long... I then stayed at her place that night and had a fun sister evening.

Yesterday was enjoyable. It was the day for our youth Mass, and so I was able to catch up with some of my friends who came back from their break for classes. It was nice... I also went to another baby shower for my sister after that and then came home and watched the Green Bay Packer's end up losing their big game....

It was a very nice week-end with a lot of family-time, which does not bother me at all... I think the one thing that really made my week-end even better is knowing that the Patriot's also lost their play-off game... hee hee hee... Not a fan of the Patriot's whatsoever. lol

Ok, now my break is almost over so I will get off now... Hopefully not much longer until I get my computer back. Not gonna lie, I have been going through some major blogging withdrawal. lol

"Rader cornerback believes he was penalized for praying after a touchdown..."

I found this a little bit disturbing....

Tue Oct 06, 2009 3:16 pm EDT

Raiders cornerback thinks he was flagged because of his religion

An Oakland Raiders cornerback claims he was penalized on Sunday for making a religious display while celebrating an interception.

After picking off a Matt Schaub(notes) pass in the end zone, Oakland Raiders cornerback Chris Johnson celebrated by dropping to his knees and raising his arms in triumph. He was instantly flagged for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for excessive celebration.

Johnson later complained that he was whistled for thanking God:

"I'm just getting on my knees giving my respect to God. I don't see how that's a personal foul or anything like that."

He actually stated exactly why it's a personal foul in the first sentence and the reasoning has nothing to do with religion. A rule instituted in 2006 prohibits NFL players from celebrating in the end zone by "going to the ground to celebrate a touchdown or using the ball as a prop." The instant Johnson fell to his knees he violated the rule. After he did that, Johnson could have read scripture, done a silent prayer or helped an old lady across the street and it wouldn't have mattered. (And, incidentally, it looks a lot more like Johnson is asking the heavens to praise him, rather than the other way around.)

So, there is no religion controversy here (despite attempts to start one by some Bay Area bloggers), but there is still an issue, namely that the NFL's touchdown celebration rules are inconsistently enforced and completely hypocritical.

It's not OK for Johnson to go to the ground in celebration/prayer after an interception, but Jared Allen(notes) can fall to his knees during his lame sack dance? And the Lambeau Leap is fine, but players can't coordinate a touchdown high five? And what's the difference if a player raises his arms in triumph while on a knee but not while standing on two feet?

I'm loathe to defend a guy who obnoxiously celebrates an interception in a game in which his team is down by 13 points, but Johnson is correct in that there's no reason getting on his knees should be a personal foul. But it's not the fault of the official who flagged him, it's the fault of the NFL owners who voted three years ago to restrict celebrations.
